GU Press: Galkayo University began consultation with graduating high school students and parents.

The focus of the meeting was to raise awareness of services on offer to new students and tackle the on-going issue of brain drain plagued by Somalia as whole, whereby both the educated and those pursuing higher education tend to seek a better life outside of Somalia whilst setting a trend of mass migration leaving behind a society that need them the most.

Dr. Dalmar briefly discussed the difficulties students in the region face in their pursuit for higher education abroad and explained how Galkayo University (GU) is now capable of accommodating their academic aspirations. Recently, many students returned from Yemen as their academic studies came to a sudden halt after the closure of many universities as a result of public unrest.

Prof. Abdulkadir Shirwa answered questions regarding the prospect of post graduate studies at GU and revealed that the University plans to run Master’s programs in the near future and stressed that even until then students will have the possibility of pursuing post graduate studies at partner institutions in Pakistan and other countries after successfully achieving their bachelor’s with GU.

Graduating Students from Mudug Secondary School and Al Sha’ab School who attended expressed their excitement and renewed hope.

Galkayo University Fact Finding Initiative

GU Press: In the awakening of a humanitarian crisis in many parts of the horn, a team of Galkayo University students along with Prof. Abdulkadir M. Shirwa set out to find the extent of the damage caused by the extensive droughts that destroyed the livelihood of many in the rural areas of Galmudug in central Somalia. The aim was to aid on going water and food distribution to the affected while reporting on the crisis. Surveys were carried out to find accurate representation of the extremely dire situation in the form of facts and figures that could then be used in quantifying and prioritization of aid whilst paving way for a deeper study of the causes and effects of reoccurring disasters such as lengthy droughts which could then possibly be used to tackle future impact of drought in the region.

Surveys conducted by Galkayo university approached participants with a two-fold method.

The first method was an objective quantitative approach. Participants were asked about the number of livestock that have perished due to drought. The second method was subjective and qualitative method in which participants expressed their day to day challenges that were brought upon by drought.

GU Press:  The U.N. warns of an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa as droughts continue to severely affect the lives of millions of Somalis. This prompted the U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos to visit Galkayo and speak to the local government of Galmudug State.

(In this photo taken Wednesday, February 02, 2011, Professor Abdulkadir M. Shirwa of Galkayo University(right) meets with Valerie Amos(left), United Nations Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Relief at Galkayo’s Hotel Embassy – GU Press)

She pleaded with Somali politicians across the country to move with “a sense of urgency” in ending decades of warfare and work more efficiently with the international community in reaching those most in need.

According to Mark Bowden, Somalia’s UN humanitarian coordinator, $4.5 million has already been allocated for relief efforts toward drought affected regions.

If rains fail in these upcoming months, the U.N. is concerned that Somalia maybe heading toward a more severe drought similar to the one in the early 1990’s that claimed the lives of thousands and displaced numerous others. – GU Press
